Even though it's still based on the old PQ25 (A0) platform shared with the Favia and the Polo, Audi is pushing forward not with a new A1 model but with a facelift.
Stationed in Sweden, our spies managed to snap pictures of this car before what will likely be a Geneva Motor Show debut. New taillights, headlights, restyled grille and a few smaller touches are clearly being added.

But wait, what's this? Four exhaust pipes at the back can only mean one thing: this is an S model. Many around the office object to the use of the S1 name for this car because it's a bit of a sacrilege. Audi probably knows this and could call this hot hatch the S A1 instead.

Regardless, we think the S1 / S A1 will be mechanically identical to the Polo R WRC, powered by a 2-liter TSI engine similar to the one in the GTI. Looking at the test prototype we think this is very much a front-wheel drive car. In fact, it doesn't even look like it has fully independent rear suspension.

Still, a 220 hp A1 should keep the guys developing the new MINI John Cooper Works from taking things easy.
