The all-new Volvo XC90 could be called the most anticipated car of early 2015. It has been well received by both media and customers, so the car company is free to focus on another model. And considering the range-topping XC90 T8 model is a plug-in hybrid, we're not surprised the upcoming S90 flagship sedan will also run on electricity.
Our spy photographers are still stationed in sunny Spain, and they tell us this is the S90 T8 prototype. By launching a large plug-in hybrid sedan, Volvo will compete directly with Mercedes, BMW and Audi. However, the Swedish automaker has established itself as a player in the green segment.
We suspect many components will be the same as on the SUV, meaning the onboard battery should recharge in about two hours and offer 50 kilometers (31 miles) of driving range. This number has become the norm in the industry, as everything from the Cayenne S E-Hybrid to the Golf GTE promises that much EV range. In reality, it should be closer to 30 km due to the weather and traffic, but it's still enough for the commute.
The rest of the power will come from a twin-charged 2-liter engine. In the most sporty driving mode, you should expect to see 400 PS and 640 Nm (472 lb-ft).
If you want a Polestar model or some similar performance S90, don't get your hopes up. The sedan is built on the new SPA modular platform, and all its engines will be four-cylinder ones.
We're confident that the front fascia of this flagship Volvo four-door will look familiar. Thor, the god of thunder, will lend his hammer for the design of the headlights while the grille will be strong and clean.
From these more recent spyshots, we can see that the side profile has a slightly sloped roof giving the car a sleeker appearance. Volvo can't afford to produce a dedicated four-door coupe model, so the S90 will wear this hat. At the rear, we notice gigantic taillights and what could be a hatchback.
