Spyshots: 2017 Audi A5 Coupe Begins Nurburgring Testing

Yesterday afternoon, Audi engineers decided it was time to send the all-new A5 coupe out for road testing. Today, the same car is back, and this time it's undergoing testing at the Nurburgring track, where the performance-oriented mods come into their own.

The car appears to be one of the most basic models in the range, since it only has one set of exhaust pipes on the left. The prototype has no prop shafts at the rear, so it's front-wheel driven. Quite a few A5 variants will have this setup, ones powered by the 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI engines, maybe even the 3.0 TDI.

On some of the laps, the 2017 A5 can be seen in the company of its platform brother, the A4. There, we can see that it's wider in the hips and a little bit lower. The design is also more aggressive and emotional.

Many have already stated the next A4 is a disappointment, even though it has not been fully revealed. However, the same can't be said about the A5, which has an intricate front end that's peppered with LED lighting elements. We expect it will be as well received as the TT if not better.

If the noises coming from the rumor mill are correct, the A5 Coupe engine lineup will be astounding in many ways. For example, the e-tron model will probably drink only about 2 l/100km.

The engine for the S5 is already being tested in the S4 sedan. It could even be a production version of the 3-liter TDI with electric supercharging technology. And if you think 350 horsepower coming from that is good, wait until the RS5 comes out in 2017. It will pack a new twin-turbo V6 that's good for around 500 horsepower.
