Despite what the rumors say, Alfa Romeo is relatively on track to launch the first SUV in its history. We have fresh spy photos and (in our eyes) it's a much sexier machine than the Maserati Levante.
The first test prototypes for the Alfa Romeo SUV were based on Fiats. All of them were kind of ugly and not pleasant to look at, like bloated family cars. But this prototype confirms our suspicion: the Stelvio is going to seem like a sedan version of the Giulia. The trademark Alfa "bird beak" grille is flanked by slender headlights that give it a sexy Italian face. The greenhouse is sharply raked at both ends, and the stance is beefy. This prototype also seems to possess wraparound taillights and a dual exhaust system.
Tired of looking at the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, wondering which one you should buy? Just hold out until the last quarter of 2016, when production of Alfa's first crossover will enter production. The Italians have clearly put the S in SUV way before the U, as the vehicle is wide and low. However, Land Rover admits that very few people use their 4x4s to climb mountains.
From what we've heard, the Stelvio will go on sale in the early part of 2017, offering all the cool turbocharged engines that you get on the Giulia. These will include everything from average 2-liter diesels to a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 for the high-performance Quadrifoglio model.
Since Maserati hasn't got the money to put a V8 in their SUV, there's really not much that will separate the Stelvio from the Levante. While most Alfa Romeos are bought with the heart, this one should be frugal and practical enough to be considered by more cost-conscious people. However, diesel engines will have to take care of all the sipping of fuel, since there are no hybrids on the horizon.
After the Stelvio proves successful, and it will, Alfa will also introduce a smaller crossover codenamed Tipo 962 and bespoke 2-door performance vehicles.
