Spyshots: 2016 Volkswagen Touran Starts Winter Testing in Full Camouflage

Even though German MPVs are never as attractive to look at as their French counterparts, especially the ones from Citroen, we still have the hots for this 2016 Touran prototype. It's been seen undergoing winter testing in Norther Sweden and despite the heavy camouflage, Golf-like design is still peaking out.

All signs point towards a brand new model rather than just another facelift, like VW did with Sharan and Caddy. The wheelbase is longer and the shape of the hood doesn't match up against the old architecture.

The new Touran should come out in the months before the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show and will most likely be built around the MQB platform, making it lighter and more efficient than before.

Here's a question for you: why does VW use a new platform for such a low volume car?

Because rumor has it that Audi and SEAT will take advantage from what they've developed and launch their own variants, including something called an "A3 Plus". But even if Volkswagen decides against giving this low-volume car access to the MQB architecture, the Touran will certainly receive a whole host of engines and other technologies that were developed for the Golf 7.

The engines available will be the latest EA288 diesels and downsized petrol TSI, equipped with standard brake energy recovery and direct fuel injection. The number of possible powertrain configurations will sit at about 10, with the 2.0 TDI block alone expected to deliver 120, 150 or 184 PS.

Like the Golf 7, the Touran will have U-shaped LED daytime running lights and bi-xenon projectors. The prototype spotted in Sweden also appears to have the sensor cluster at the top of the windshield that reads road signs and activates the emergency braking system to avoid or reduce the impact of frontal collisions.
