The 2016 Skoda Roomster has been spied for the first time by our team of car paparazzi. This more practical compact car will be like a cross between the new Caddy from Volkswagen and Skoda's 2015 Fabia supermini that we tested recently.
As far as the platform is concerned, the Roomster is going to share most of its components with the Caddy. However, the design will be influenced by the latest generation Skoda models.
Being based on the Caddy means the Roomster will actually be a little bit wider, both on the outside and inside. Besides adding elbow room, this platform will mean better handling is on offer.
Under the hood, we will see many of the 3- and 4-cylinder turbo mills that VW developed for the MQB platform. Starting with the bottom, we will see one of the first applications of the 1.0 TSI in the Skoda range. The downsized engine would offer both frugality and 102 PS of reasonable performance.
Other petrol engines should include a 1.2 TSI carryover with 84 PS and maybe even the 1.4-liter, capable of burning natural gas. Most of the TDI diesel engines will be 3-cylinder 1.4-liter ones with outputs ranging from 75 to 110 PS. However, there will also be one 2-liter model with 150 PS.
The biggest changes will be inside, where we'll see a steering wheel borrowed from the Fabia, updated infotainment and connectivity, plus much better trim. Look for the 2016 Skoda Roomster to debut early next year and show up at the Geneva Motor Show. The Skoda Roomster II will be produced together with the VW Caddy in Poland.
Editor's note: the funny thing is that we don't know if this is a regular passenger car or the Roomster Praktik with blocked windows.
