When the GLE Coupe made its debut in Detroit back in January, Mercedes let everybody know 2015 will be the year of the SUV. Sure, they will also launch a few more Smarts and the C-Class Coupe, but the most interesting debuts will be 4x4.
This is the flagship model, the GLS, which is essentially a facelift and tech upgrade for the GL-Class. Under the new Mercedes naming scheme, all SUVs will start with "GL" and will have a letter at the end that matches their sedan equivalent. So based on that logic, this is like the S-Class of the offroader world. The top brass is right now even considering a Maybach version, though that won't be ready for some time to come.

Compared to the pre-facelift GL, our prototype doesn't look much different. It has a new front bumper inspired by the S-Class, upgraded LED headlights and a few smaller changes around the back. The profile has not been changed, which is actually a bit of a shame.

We've talked about the GLS on a number of occasions before, but something has changed in the meantime. The German automaker has shown a hardcore offroader called the G500 4x4 that uses a 4-liter twin-turbo V8. It's the first time the mill from the C63 has been used outside the AMG lineup and we believe it indicates the GLS 500 will downsize from 4.7 liters to just 4.

That could be the only major change to the engine lineup, since the "400" model with a new twi-turbo V6 pushing 333 PS was already launched last year. Of course, if they decide to make a Maybach version as well, the 6-liter V12 will have to be adopted, though no prototypes have yet been seen.
