Despite inter-brand rivalries, nobody at Mercedes or Audi can dispute that BMW is the innovator of the Sports Activity Coupe market, the company that first tried putting a coupe roof on an SUV to make it look nicer. Now though, competition is getting tougher and the X6 needs to step up its game with a new design.
A brand new, second generation X6 is being developed using the new X5's architecture. Changes in design, materials used and features will make it tough for Mercedes or Audi to top the 6er.

We last saw the second generation X6 back in October, and now we have the very first images of the more hardcore X6 M version. The high-performance SUV first became available in 2009 after debuting at the New York Auto Show. The current model that should stay in production for another year is powered by a 555 hp 4.4-liter V8 and reaches 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. We think BMW with switch to the newer 560 hp version of that engine and make a lighter body that will reduce sprints to about 4.4 seconds.

Design wise, there's quite a lot that differs from the first-gen X6 M. Bigger headlights are connected to a new grille. The overall impression is that of a more planted, muscular car.
