Spyshots: 2015 Mercedes SLS AMG Facelift

With the imminent arrival of the new C190 bespoke AMG sportscar, we've begun singing the death of the SLS. But perhaps it's too early for the successor of the legendary Gullwing, too early to switch it for a car without doors that open up.

Those spy photos show that Mercedes-Benz has a large injection to update one of our favorite super-GT cars ever. Facelifts for both the SLS coupe and roadster have been spotted at the sam time, with changes expected to be made public for the 2015 model year.

The front and rear bumpers are flat black, indicating that's where engineers are constantly making adjustments. But the elements are identical to the ones currently on the car, with the exception of the enlarged air intake on either side of the fascia.

These much larger units remind us of the changes made to G63 AMG prototypes that we were looking into back in 2011. Could this mean a new engine is coming? It's likely.

As far as we know, the side air intake doesn't cool the engine, feeding into the wheel arch and braking system. Since Mercedes has an oil to water cooling system, this isn't an oil radiator either, which means we're likely looking at a turbo engine for the SLS, a replacement for the famous M159 naturally aspirated V8.

The S63 AMG was supposed to be the very last Mercedes fitted with 5.5-liter M157 twin-turbo AMG engine. They could be going back on their word? The only other option would be the rumored 4-liter that going into the new C63 AMG. We'll just have to wait a little longer and see.
