Despite its sensible entry price, the Audi A4 can't possibly compete in compact executive car segment, not in the face of stiff competition from the new Mercedes C-Class. Heck, the A4 doesn't even come with the same active safety technology the smaller and cheaper A3 sedan gets.
That's why the Ingolstadt car company has started work on a brand new A4, finally replacing the B8, which has been around since 2008. We believe these are the very first photos of the next-gen car, as brown tarps are usually used by Audi in early stages of development. Yet strangely, the car looks almost ready, with new exhaust, wing mirror and tornado side line are all peaking from behind the camo.
The A4 will probably be based on the Volkswagen group MQB modular platform, just like a Golf or Skoda Octavia. Rumor has it that extensive use of aluminum and ultra high strength steel will increase the rigidity of the car and shed up to 100 kilos lighter, offering a curb weight of about 1,330 kilograms.
Rumors suggest that the engine range available from launch will start with a 1.4-liter TFSI rated at 150, which will be offered with cylinder deactivation. A bigger 2-liter TFSI will also be available with around 220 hp. A number of 2.0 TDIs will make up the bulk of sales, with outputs ranging from 140 PS to 190 PS. Finally a plug-in version combining a 2.0-liter TSFI engine and an e-quattro electric motor will also be offered.
