Spyshots: 2014 Smart Fortwo Test Mule

Usually, when we show you a test mule of an upcoming vehicle in our website’s spyshots section, the parts come from just one manufacturer. But Mercedes has jumped across the Maginot Line and is building cars with the French, creating a test mule that’s both a smart and a Renault.

This alliance impacts not only the small cars, but also the engines they use, commercial vehicles built by both companies as well as Nissan’s luxury division, Infiniti.

Getting back to the test mule at hand, it has the headlights from the old Twingo, the taillights from the Twingo facelift and probably quite a few Smart parts underneath. The car is the result of the Edison Project agreement, entered by Renault-Nissan and Daimler in April 2010.

Out of the agreement will result a new Renault city car, rumored to be called the Izzy, and also the new Smart Fortwo, both built on a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive platform.

Styling for the new Fortwo will borrow from the For-us concept, and there will be petrol, diesel and electric versions available.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
