What used to be a British brand, Mini, is getting ready to become not very British at all. That’s because the next generation of the Cooper hatch that started it all back in the early 2000s will soon get a third generation developed on a BMW front-drive architecture.
To get ready for the launch, all engine configurations are being tested on the track and off it, and this Cooper S has been spotted by our spy photographers lapping the famous Nurburgring track. The new MINI is not very mini, having grown in just about every proportion. However, this might work for the overall design of the car, which was constrained last time by new crash protection regulations.
Recent report suggest the car is due to be shown either later this year or early next year. However, the Cooper S is scheduled to arrive toward the later part of 2013.
The prototype features bigger wheels than the regular Cooper, as well as a set of twin center-mounted exhaust tips. The 1.6-liter turbo and six-speed manual gearbox should both be kept on.
