Spyshots: 2014 MINI Cooper 5-Door Hatch
In an effort to make the brand bigger and more popular, MINI have forgotten the Cooper is their icon and have completely transformed it into something of a family hatchback. Yes, it’s grown, from being a supermini smaller than most other superminis to what we can only describe as a C-segment Golf rival.
These are the first photos taken up close of the new MINI hatchback as a five-door. Since the platform is shared with the upcoming BMW 1-Series Gran Turismo compact MPV, the overhangs are substantial and the proportions are large.
Previous reports suggested the two rear doors would be rear-hinged and would be optional extras, but from the looks of it, the MINI will have a normal model range, like any other boring car, and the 5-door will simply be a model.
We’ve been downers throughout the story, but there is one piece of good news. The engines will be strictly 1.5-liter turbo units, both diesels and petrols, a new generation from BMW which we hope will come with much better fuel economy.
