Spyshots: 2014 BMW X5 Has Grown

A prototype of the next-generation BMW X5 has been spotted testing once again, and early signs are pleasing. Customers who wanted their SUV to be much different in the past will be glad to see the new X5 is much longer. Could this be the long rumored X5L with an extended wheelbase?

We don’t know that yet, but the X5 will probably grow in size anyway, in order to offer much more interior space than the X3, which in turn has grown with the latest generation to become bigger than the X1.

Cutting weight is also on BMW’s agenda in this case, and the new X5 is expected to make use of aluminum for the chassis and composite plastics for the body.

Powertrain options will continue to include V8s and straight-six units, but a four-cylinder unit like that seen in its brother the 528i sedan is possible.

The next X5 will make use of plenty of active safety systems that scan the road for potential threats. It will also have a pop-up hood to cushion pedestrians against blows.
