Spyshots: 2013 Volkswagen Golf VII
Our spy photographers captures this prototype during a testing session in Scandinavia and, as we can see, VW will stick to the same design. However, the new platform will allow the car to be around 100 lbs (50 kg) lighter. Just like with the current generation, we’ll get three- and five-door hatchbacks, a station wagon and the high-roof Plus version.
Under the hood, we’ll mostly get turbocharged, direct-injected petrol (TSI) and diesel (TDI) engines, with the range being topped by the GTI and the R, which will see the EA888 engine replace the all-mighty EA114 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, with the Golf R set to develop as much as 300 hp or more. However, due to its high price, the future of the 1.4-litet twincharger engine, which combines turbocharging and supercharging, is still unclear.
VW should also introduce a plug-in hybrid version, with should us a petrol unit in conjunction with an electric one and come with an electric-only range of 30 miles (50 km). While the current Golf is front-wheel drive only ,with the exception ofthe AWD Golf R, the VII will also offer four-wheel drive for mid-range engines.
Volkswagen plans to seriously update the vehicle in terms of features, with the Golf set to receive goodies typically reserved for superior segments, such as an adaptive cruise control system.
