For those of you of a more tender age, Spyker must seem like one of those companies formed overnight that will come up with one model and then go die a peaceful death because nobody really cares for them.
While not exactly an old company in itself - the Spyker Cars as we know it has only been around since 1999 - the Spyker name carries a lot of weight within the industry, and that’s mainly because the Dutch brand built the kind of incredibly complicated and sophisticated interiors only Pagani has managed to equal since.

Over the short course of its active history, Spyker basically only came up with one model, the C8. It suffered numerous variations, including a larger engine and a longer wheelbase, as well as an open top version, but the core of the car remained the same.

The original Spyker C8 used an Audi 4.2-liter V8 engine with 400 hp, enough to give the Dutch sports car a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph). Later versions used a different engine that had the same 4.2-liter displacement, but offered 525 hp, while the W12 engine was also used on some models.

The Spyker cars didn’t come cheap, with the most accessible of them going over the €200,000 ($225,000) mark. However, the high asking price wasn’t enough to save Spyker Cars from financial woes, filing for bankruptcy in 2014 only to have the decision reversed in 2015.

Now, the Dutch are showing the first signs of life after a very long absence, and they’re not giving us that much time to wait: Spyker will be bringing a new model at the Geneva Motor Show that will start only just next month. Our excitement is a little cut short by the full name of the new car - Spyker C8 Preliator. The fact that’s worrying us is the presence of the “C8” bit, but let’s just hope it will come with a new design. Not that there’s anything wrong with the old one, we just want to see more of what Spyker is capable of.

And Spyker might very well have to approach Preliator’s design differently, as reports suggest the car’s powertrain will feature some sort of electrification - either hybrid or even fully-electric. That’s down to the company’s collaboration with Volta Volare, an American startup that specializes in electric aircraft.

Since the information is still scarce, we’ll stop here and just wait patiently for either the start of the Geneva International Motor Show or for Spyker to release more details about its new car.
