Ever since comic books have turned regular cars into superhero shuttles back in the 50s, placing cars in movies as a way to promote new models has grown substantially. Today, almost any automaker targets the Hollywood scene in their marketing struggles to prevail a better image and bigger sales. It’s the Germans' turn this time with their MINI Cooper S that is turning into the hero car with Sony Picture’s new Pixels movie, starring Adam Sandler.
From custom built Art Deco-inspired Batman cars to James Bond Aston Martins, heroes usually drive the biggest, fastest and most powerful rides petrolheads can only dream of. Regularly designed with some super high-tech features that turn the cars into spaceship-worthy vehicles, rarely do we get the chance to see the good guys driving a three-door hatchback, yet here we are.
Set to be released in US cinemas on July 24, Pixels has the four main protagonists Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage, Denis Akiyama and Josh Gad driving their own individual “MINI Ghosts”. The four characters are playing a very special role in the fight against the bad guys, since the US government is counting on the old-school arcaders from the 1980s.
In case you haven’t heard, in Pixels, the world turns into a real-life video game that is attacked by extra-terrestrials who pick up signals of the most popular games of the 1980s, including Space Invaders. Problem is that these creatures believe that destroying small pixelated aliens is a declaration of war so they swiftly dispatch oversized Pac-Man and Donkey Kong figures to various megacities in the world, where they turn everything they touch into pixels.
Our superheroes might have the knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the video game characters, but they will need their superhero cars too in order to get the job done and save humanity. Here’s where the MINI Cooper S 3-door models bearing the names and colors of the Pac-Man Ghosts come in.
