If electric vehicles are said to be the future, then we need a reliable and ecological way to create electricity. Solar panels seem to be the answer, but then what do you do when it’s cloudy or during the night? This Israeli company found the solution.
Brenmiller Energy, a leading thermosolar company, has come up with a better technique at using the sun’s energy. It’s not a new concept but it comes with a neat implementation to work better.

Unlike traditional photovoltaic cells that convert photon energy directly into electricity, Brenmiller decided to go the other way around and use the sun’s heat. Using parabolic mirrors to concentrate the sun rays on a smaller patch, the resulting heat (around 500 degrees C/932 F) is used create steam, which then powers turbines and generates electricity.

As we were saying, the technology isn’t new, but the company found a way to store some of that heat coming from the solar panels and use it when the sun is blocked by clouds or even at night.

This makes for a fully stabilized steam supply that’s available for 24 hours each day of the week. The new system is called bCell and each one is comprised of a solar field and an Energy Center, where the heat from the sun is initially stored and then released to create steam.

The Energy Center works almost like a buffer zone, eliminating gaps in the steam supply generated by bad weather or nightfall. Each independent module can produce 1.5 MWe - 2.25 MWe equivalent of steam.

Brenmiller is positively looking for a big investor in order for the technology to be implemented. The solution is scalable depending on the power need and it can be used to power your residential area for example.
