The guys over at smart have developed a simple, yet amusing idea that could save lives by making pedestrians actually wait for the green light, before they cross the street. Called Dancing Traffic Light, the experiment took place in a square in Lisbon, Portugal as part of their Smart summer ad.
Drivers usually stop and wait for the green light no matter what, and the ones who don’t usually get their license suspended. But when it comes to pedestrians, statistics show that people around the world tend to ignore the red color. This is probably why the company that built the “smart car,” tried out a new way of keeping things safe.

The experiment is part of an ad campaign for new Smart car called #WhatAreYouFor, which emphasizes the company’s dedication to safety. First, they placed a dance room on a square in Lisbon, and invited random pedestrians to go into the box and dance. They could even choose for their favorite song. Then, their moves were displayed on a few traffic lights in real time.

According to Smart, the experiment resulted in 81% more people stopping and waiting at those red lights. It’s obviously a great idea, but there are no signs the “dancing” lights will be installed elsewhere yet.

Whatever the case, we think having a bit of fun would always help in those moments when you just have to wait, so maybe dancing would be one way to make this world a better place...
