In a survey made on a... let's say distinctive sample of 1,500 licensed drivers, carinsurance.com tried to find out what are the most embarrassing cars to be seen in on American roads.
Winning by far the not-so-coveted award was the smallest car available in the US: the smart fortwo. “It looks like I couldn't afford a real car,” one participant said.
For the survey, the people from Car Insurance chose 12 different car models to show to the drivers, asking them to indicate which one would be embarrassing to be seen in, rank the three most embarrassing and also give a reason for their choices.
A weighted score of expressed on a 1 to 10 scale was named the “Cringe Score”. The tiny fortwo, being about half the size but looking like a quarter of an American fullsize pickup, was naturally picked as looking too small and appearing unsafe.
When looking at either NHTSA, IIHS and EuroNCAP safety test results for the smart fortwo, the car is actually way safer than it would appear to an unknowledgeable observer. You can see that for yourself in the following video:
