The second generation of the Smart has received a facelift that brings minor visual changes, a restyled interior and an efficiency increase for the petrol engines.

The modifications, which target the ForTwo coupe and cabrio, will be shown to the public for the first time at the Paris Auto Show in September.

The front of the car has been fitted with optional daytime running lights that use LED technology and are placed in the lower part of the front bumper, which has also been redesigned.

The carmaker now offers a greater level of customization, as the car has received new types of lightweight alloy rims, a new green matte finish and the option to have the safety cell painted in white, with matching grille and exterior mirrors.

The interior of the car now offers a fresh dashboard with a new instrument panel. The center armrest has also been redesigned while the interior lightning uses LEDs. One interesting feature is the optional communication and entertainment system that comes with a large, color monitor. The list of optional equipment also includes goodies like a premium sound system with eight speakers and an USB interface.

As far as the engine range is concerned, the 1.0 liter tree cylinder petrol unit that uses direct injection has received an ECU remap that brings the combined cycle fuel consumption down to 48 US mpg and the CO2 emissions to 97 g/km for the 60 and 70 hp incarnations of the engine. In addition to that, the range-topping Brabus version has made its way over the 100 hp mark, delivering 101 hp (previously it offered 98 hp).

Our say: The facelift, which includes more exterior colors & combinations, is being launched shortly after Nicolas Hayek, the engineer who created the original smart (and the Rolex watches) passed away. Could this be some sort of a tribute?
