Skoda Yeti Goes Into Production

The newest creation from Czech manufacturer Skoda, the Yeti, has entered series production at the Czech republic facility. This makes the Yeti the fifth model from the manufacturer's lineup, and the first entrance in the crossover segment.

The production debut followed a number of pre-production tests, mostly conducted around Oslo, Norway. The terrain there provided the best testing grounds for some of the key systems, such as the driving stability system, ventilation and air conditioning system performance. The company gathered important information regarding chassis parameters, acoustic comfort and the off-road systems.

Yeti uses the same Fabia-derived suspension, brakes and transmission as the Roomster mini-MPV. It also combines the front body structure of the Fabia and the rear body and axle of the Octavia.

Engine wise, Skoda will provide a total of five engines, two gasoline and three diesel, producing between 103 and 167 horsepower. The 1.2-liter TSI with front-wheel drive is the smallest displacement-engine in the lineup, followed by the 2.0-liter TDI CR DPF unit that comes with either front wheel drive or 4x4. The top of the range engine is the 2.0-liter TDI CR DPF all-wheel drive that produces 167 horsepower.

As for functionality innovations, the 4x4 Yeti brings the VarioFlex rear seat system, which increases the loading capacity of the Yeti to 1,760 liters. To give you a better picture of the car's dimensions, we list them below.

  • Wheelbase: 2,578 mm
  • Length: 4,233 mm
  • Width: 1,793 mm
  • Height: 1,691 mm
  • Ground clearance: 180 mm
  • Boot space: 1,760 litres (with seats removed)

Designed to compete with the Suzuki Jimny and Nissan Qashqai, the Yeti is scheduled to go on sale in the UK sometimes in September.
