{img align=left}Yesterday, we reported the introduction of the Skoda Superb Estate 4x4 to the UK market. Today, we make two economy steps (one in vehicle size and one in displacement), and we present the debut of the 1.2 liter TSI engine and the 1.6 TDI common rail engine with the DSG dual clutch transmission for the Skoda Octavia on the aforementioned market. Downsizing all the way.

The big novelty is the small 1.2 liter TSI unit. A perfect example of downsizing, it uses turbocharging technology to offer 105 HP. It is available with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG gearboxes, for the hatchback an the estate versions of the car and can be matched with the S and the SE trim levels. The engine has already proved its balance capabilities, as it was first introduced on the Yeti crossover.

On the Octavia, the 1.2 TSI offers a CO2 emissions figure of 134 g/km and returns a combined fuel economy of 49.6 (UK) MPG. Maybe more impressive for its 1,197 cc displacement is the time in which it enables the Octavia to reach the first hundred: 10.8 seconds. These figures are estimates.

The diesel downsizing promoter, the 1.6 TDI common-rail 105 HP unit had already been available for the Octavia range, but now its capabilities will be put to a better use with the introduction of the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Matted to it and sitting under the Octavia’s bonnet, the engine has a CO2 emission figure of 123 g/km. The unit is available with the same bodystyle and trim combinations as the 1.2 TSI as well as in the Elegance version.

We like the new 1.2 TSI engine (for a civil non-performance car), at least as far as we can tell by reading the specs.
