Slowly but surely, Volkswagen is dumping a lot of development money into its new 1-liter engine, replacing many of the 1.2 TSI units that were previously available. The Octavia 1.0 TSI is on sale right now in Germany. As far as we know, it's not only the first Octavia with the 3-cylinder turbo, but also the first production Skoda model.
The unit is rated at 115 PS and 200 Nm, in line with rivals like the Ford EcoBoost. It's loosely based on the 3-cylinder installed in the Citigo, but with more advanced features. In fact, this is the only Octavia gasoline engine that qualifies for emissions class A, which is quite something.
The 1.0 TSI makes slightly more power and torque than the 1.2 TSI that it replaces. The basic 1.2 TSI with 85 HP can still be ordered, but only as the basic Octavia Active with steel wheels and Dacia-like interior. We'd avoid that one!
With a 6-speed manual, the Octavia 1.0 TSI takes 9.9 seconds to reach 100 km/h and has a top speed of 202 km/h. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 4.5 liters per 100 km, 0.6 better than the 1.4 TSI, yet inferior by 0.7 to the 1.6 TDI.
You can also order the 1.0 TSI with the 7-speed DSG gearbox, but you will be paying €1,800 more for it. Fuel economy and performance remain unaffected by the switch to a dual-clutch unit. There is probably going to be a GreenLine version of the engine, just like there is for the Polo and Golf BlueMotion.
We found press releases from Spain and Italy that say the Octavia 1.0 TSI emits just 99 grams, but that could be for the eco model. The one that's currently on sale makes 106 grams, which is still better than the 114 grams achieved by the Octavia 1.2 TSI.
We've also done the math and found out the smaller 1-liter engine has made the car lighter as well, as the Octavia sedan's weight has been reduced from 1,230 to 1,211 kilograms. For such a large car, that's very impressive. So you don't need to pay Volkswagen money to enjoy their technology any more!
