In what has been the Czech manufacturer's best ever half-year sales period in the United Kingdom, the Fabia supermini has moved more units than the rest of the Skoda lineup. From January to June, the Volkswagen Group's subsidiary was met with good demand by the Brits, with some 39,176 new cars registered in total.
We've reported before that this first part of the year saw U.K. new automobile sales soar by more than 10 percent over the same period of 2013, with the biggest gains coming from alternatively fueled vehicles. Out of the 1,287,265 new cars registered, Ford dominates with 173,554 units or 13 percent market share, while Skoda managed to move a grand total of 39,176 motors.
That translated to just 3 percent market share, but the result also means some 21 percent growth in sales volume over January – June 2013, which is pretty staggering indeed if you take into account that Great Britain is still recovering from the 2007 – 2008 financial crisis. With 6,429 hatchbacks and 2,485 estates, the Skoda Fabia was the most popular model during the past six months.
The Yeti was close behind at 6,869 units, while the Citigo, Octavia hatch and Octavia estate each contributed more than 5,000 sales to the six-month total. Compared to June 2013, the last month saw Skoda move 116 more cars for a grand total of 6,477 automobiles. “This is a thrilling result for the first half of the year and proves that as a company we are supplying what people want – practical, smart and value-for-money cars that deliver on every level,” said Alasdair Stewart, Skoda U.K. brand director.
Analysts from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders is expecting U.K. new car sales to come close to 2.4 million by the end of the year. "The overall market has risen faster than we were expecting but, after a bumper March, growth is showing signs of stabilising around our forecast level," said SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes. In related news, the all-new Skoda Fabia has been spotted undergoing high altitude testing in the Alps and it's expected to be officially unveiled later this year.
