Shoei is offering the Transitions CWR-1 photochromic face shield, the result of joint efforts of the helmet manufacturer and Transitions Optical Inc. We’re looking at an adaptive face shield which will range from clear to very dark depending on the lighting conditions during the ride.
So far the Shoei Transitions CWR-1 face shield is only available for the RF-1200 full-face helmet, but if the technology will catch, we are definitely going to see it extended to other helmets. Like other similar face shields, the Transitions CWR-1 will automatically self-adjust without requiring user intervention. Other designs include manual activation/ deactivation and battery recharging, like the recent LCD visor AGV showed earlier.

No more need to carry multiple face shields on a trip

If you’re not comfortable with sunglasses, carrying tinted and clear visors with you on longer outings seems like the way to go. The new Shoei face shield however eliminated this need, as the Transitions CWR-1 will adjust its opacity on the fly.

Shoei describes the active principle behind this face shield: "When Transitions shields are exposed to UV light, trillions of photochromic molecules in the shield begin to change structure. This reaction is what causes the shields to darken. The superiority of Transitions‘ brand technology lies in their exclusive, patented formulas. The molecules constantly and smoothly re-calibrate so the optimal amount of light reaches your eyes whether you’re in bright sunlight or under cloud cover.”

The Transitions CWR-1 is also blocking 100% of the UVA and UVB radiation and has a full activation time of 2 minutes. Shoei adds that the “photochromic performance is influenced by temperature, UV exposure and shield material.”

We have attached a FAQ document after the jump and many of your questions will hopefully be answered there. If you still have doubts, you should pay your nearest Shoei dealer a visit after the visors reach the stores (they are currently being imported in the US) and have one tested.

Of course, choosing in favor of the Transitions CWR-1 will also be affected by the tint degree versus certain light conditions and, as we personally know, the color of the “dark”, just like the case of traditional sunglasses. The Transitions CWR-1 will be available for $169.99 (€156) Pinlock-compatible.
