Shanghai GM Sold Over 10 Million Automobiles Since 1997

Founded 17 years ago, Shanghai General Motors Company Ltd is the joint venture between China-based automaker SAIC Motor and GM. Although the first vehicle of the venture was manufactured in 1999, Shanghai GM celebrates an impressive milestone this month, even by China standards.

The joint effort announced that it has sold over 10 million cars since it was founded in 1997. Like we pointed out beforehand, the milestone has been reached in record time considering the first China-spec car rolled off the production line 23 months after construction of the first GM-SAIC plant began.

Within 8 years, Shanghai GM managed to move a million automobiles, but the first record-braking feat came in 2010, when the Chinese-American automotive consortium became the first domestic automaker to sell more than a million cars in a year.

GM-SAIC boasts with a record 1,518,844 passenger vehicles sold during the first 11 months of 2014

Compared to the same period in 2013, that equals to a volume increase of 9.6 percent, which is very impressive considering the Chinese car market is creeping towards oversaturation. In total, GM can boast with 10 joint ventures, 2 wholly owned foreign enterprises and a 58,000-strong workforce in China.

At the present moment, Shanghai General Motors Company Ltd produces or imports passenger and commercial vehicles wearing Baojun, Jiefang, Wuling, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Opel badges.

Considering that Shanghai GM moved nearly 3.2 million cars in China last year, it’s very hard to imagine how Buick and Chevrolet will honor the automaker’s expectations to become the first Chinese automobile manufacturer with two car brands with annual sales of 1 million units in China.
