The most famous ride-sharing app continues to create controversies with its services. This time it’s South Korea’s capital Seoul, where the city council is currently planning to ban the app, being concerned about the people’s safety and the threat Uber represents for normal taxi companies.
Uber has been introduced in Seoul last August, currently offering only the Uber Black service, connecting customers with professional drivers and entry level luxury vehicles. The service is considerably more expensive than traditional taxi traveling, but the city council is concerned about the other options Uber could introduce there.

The app also allows for car sharing or transport with cheaper cars and inexperienced drivers, which is considered illegal. Unqualified taxi drivers are charging customers for similar services, while avoiding the whole regulatory process and thus creating unfair competition for traditional taxi companies.

Other than that, app users could get to ride in vehicles that might not be safe, despite Uber saying all its drivers are tested along with their vehicles before operating.

Seoul’s council is afraid Uber’s own rules might not be matching local transport regulations and is now working to ban the expansion of the company’s products. In fact, the ban addresses all kind of similar apps that allow for car sharing.

The city’s authorities are also working on their own app, which lets users hail standard, licensed taxis.

Despite the fuss and strikes created in different places of the world, Uber seems to continue growing, with June raising the company $1.2 billion in new capital. In fact, all the negative reactions seem to help the company get recognized by more people and try it at least of curiosity.

And how can you not be curious, since one of the app’s feature can spawn Optimus Prime for you to ride with in some US locations.
