An organization has created a series of events that will allow inventors and researchers to experience self-driving cars on the track.
A start-up called Self-Driving Track Days, which has a clear purpose, has announced it has scheduled the first events of their kind in Europe. These events are private, and are designed to allow any team that develops autonomous vehicles to test its accomplishments in a controlled environment.
The first Self-Driving Track Day event will be held this November, at the UK’s Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground. There, researchers will be able to experiment with the settings, sensors, and software of their autonomous vehicles. The first event of this kind in Europe has access to 1.6-kilometer (1 mile) long multi-lane motorway straight, which will be used for first driverless tests of independent projects.
Unlike events reserved for automakers, the Self-Driving Track Days operation is designed for inventors, innovators, and researchers. Instead of asking massive sums to allow the rental of a track or a research institute, the event will bring access to specialist training from industry professionals without the enormous costs usually presented by them. An undisclosed fee will be required.
Automotive companies, start-ups, and students are welcome to join and form multi-partner teams at the networking meet-up events organized in various venues, like the Google Campus in London and AutoWorld Brussels.
The second event hosted by this association will be held in Provence, France, on February 21-22, 2017. Teams will be able to send their driverless vehicles on the Castellet racing circuit, which will include separate handling areas.
The third Self-Driving Track Day event is planned in Surrey, UK, on 10-11 May 2017, where teams will put their autonomous vehicles on the test of surfaced and unsurfaced circuits.
The fourth scheduled event takes place in Austria, on 28-29 July 2017, where four tracks will be available at the Zentrum Teesdorf to allow for more tests to be carried out in complete safety.
