SAIC-GM-Wuling to Enter Indian Market through Minivans

SAIC Motor, General Motors and Liuzhou Wuling, the three parts forming the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint-business, are analyzing the Indian market, as SAIC will become a major shareholder of GM’s Indian unit and JV will have to decide the vehicle line-up to be introduced on this market - various media sources expect minivans to be the segment JV’s segment of choice, as Gasgoo reports.

SAIC Chairman Hu Maoyuan had previously revealed that the company would bring low-cost cars to India, such as the new Sail and Wuling’s minivans. Subsequently, one of SGMW’s executives said that Wuling minivans could be the first products introduced to the Indian market, during the unveiling ceremony of the Wuling SunShine.

SGMW is GM’s light commercial vehicle partnership in China. In 2009, the company was the first automaker in China to break the 1 million vehicles per year sales landmark, with its sales increasing by 63,9 percent to 1,061,213 units. 596,630 of these were Wuling Susnshines. The carmaker’s January 2010 sales saw a 56.9 percent year-to-year increase, reaching 119,969 units.

As SGMW has become a valuable asset, GM intends to increase its stake in the joint-business by purchasing an additional 10 percent from Liuzhou Wuling. After the Wuling minivans posted the aforementioned sales, GM ans SAIC decided to include the minivans in their global sales scheme.

SGMW was officially launched in 2002. The company has two manufacturing bases: Liuzhou, which is also the carmaker's headquarters and has three production facilities, and Qingdao.
