After last summer Parker Hannifin Corporation tested its new RunWise Hydrostatic technology on refuse trucks in Hialeah, Miami, the manufacturer announced today it managed to sign a contract for the upgrading of refuse truck fleets in Miami and Hialeah, as well as the sale of 11 Autocar E3 trucks for the city.

"These orders build on our ongoing development and commercialization of our unique hydraulic hybrid technology platform and demonstrates the adaptability of our technologies to different vehicle classes," Jeff Cullman, Parker Hannifin Hydraulics president said in a release.

"A variation of this technology platform has already received commercial scale orders for use on walk-in delivery vehicles. We are particularly pleased to see our public agency partners lead the way in recognizing the benefits that this technology can bring in terms of lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact."

RunWise makes use of a special software which allows seamless shifting and smoother braking. During last summer's tests, the technology registered an amazing 72 percent improvement in fuel efficiency. According to Parker Hannifin, this translates into a 28 tons reduction in the carbon footprint of any given truck.

The pre-production system (regular production is not scheduled to begin sooner than 2011) also allows brake maintenance period for each truck to be extended from every 6 months to once every 24 months to even 30 months depending on duty cycle.

"The City of Hialeah will continue to reduce our carbon footprint across the board. The purchase of these hybrid recycle trucks is part of our commitment to reduce emissions, save fuel costs and improve the quality of life for our citizens," Julio Robaina, Hialeah mayor concluded.
