Good and interesting news comes straight from India via Europe’s Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), the equivalent of the USPTO. According to the mentioned source, the historic Indian bike manufacturer Royal Enfield has applied for a trademark for the name “Himalayan”. Needless to say, it’s obvious that Royal Enfield is planning an interesting move for the European market
Visionary and exotic motorcycle designer Pierre Terblanche, who has left his mark on bikes from top makers in the world, including Cagiva, Norton, Confederate, Ducati and more has just joined the ranks of Royal Enfield at the end of 2014 as the chief of the design department. Saying that Terblanche has everything to do with the new Himalayan project is only common sense, and even a child could see this.

Is Royal Enfield building an adventure bike?

The biggest question is what’s cooking behind the closed doors at Royal Enfield. Most of the rumors from India see Enfield working hard to deliver an adventure bike powered by a 400-500cc single, which is also supposed to open a new phase in the existence of the brand.

Possibly, this new era means a completely different approach to doing business, as Royal Enfield might have finally understood that their underpowered 350 and even 500cc retro bikes are nowhere near enough if they want to make it count in Europe.

How much is Royal Enfield capable of changing its ways remains to be seen. Fact is that they have a lot of good examples around them in the Indian market, and a tie-up with a Western manufacturer could only work miracles. Am I the only one who thinks that Royal Enfield’s retro bikes and Moto Guzzi’s (somewhat) similarly-styled would look interesting side by side?

Oh, and the Himalayan trademark does not cover only motorcycles, but a whole ton of other products, including head protection, clothing, riding gear, motorcycle paraphenalia and pretty much all you can relate to an adventure bike. Sounds more and more interesting...
