The British luxury marque confirmed today the development of a new Rolls-Royce. Slate to reach the market by mid-2016, the company informs that the model will deliver effortless, open-top touring through luxury, style and elegance. So we know that it's a drop-top, but the brand doesn't specify its name.
Even with all the mystery surrounding it, we know that the upcoming Rolls will be a soft top variant of the Wraith, expected to be given the Wraith Drophead Coupe nameplate. Our carparazzi spotted a test mule back in May and it's pretty clear that the Drophead will be equipped with a cloth roof, not a fancy metal hard top. So what else is there in store for the those currently in the market for such a car?

Well, the Wraith costs around €245,000 in its most basic trim level, or about $300,000 in the United States. That's quite the price bump over the four-door Ghost, underpinned by a heavily modified BMW 7 Series platform internally known as the F01. So we bet that the Wraith Drophead Coupe will boast a stratospheric sticker price when it will hit dealerships in the summer of 2016. As for the oily bits, a twin-turbo V12 displacing 6.6 liters and churning out 624 horsepower will propel this luxury land yacht, while an eight-speed ZF 8HP90 automatic transmission will row your gears seamlessly.

Speaking from the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, West Sussex, Torsten Muller-Otvos, the chief executive officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, declared that “I am truly delighted to confirm today the development of our new model which will open an exciting new chapter in the great story of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. We are currently developing an exciting and thoroughly contemporary interpretation of a pinnacle drophead tourer which will introduce even more discerning men and women to Rolls-Royce ownership.”

Peter Schwarzenbauer, chairman of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, welcomed the announcement, saying, “The announcement of a new Rolls-Royce model is always a seminal moment in the automobile industry. When it arrives in 2016, this elegant and sensuous new car will build on the success of our current models and will play a key part in fulfilling Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ commitment to long-term sustainable growth.” If it were our money, we'd bet that the Wraith Drophead Coupe will break cover at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
