Rolls-Royce. What do you think about when you hear the name of the best name in the luxury biz? If you ask me, I’d answer Silver Shadow owners or Kim Kardashian in her murdered Ghost.
Be that as it may, the BMW-owned ultra-luxury manufacturer will soon reinvent itself. Some say that the Double R sold its soul to the devil, but the idea of a sport utility vehicle with the Spirit of Ecstasy up front isn’t wrong. Take a look around and you’ll understand why: because SUVs outnumber regular cars, Rolls-Royce is fully entitled to do a Sport utility vehicle.

Introducing the Cullinan. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, these are the first official images of the Rolls-Royce SUV wearing a production body. It’s something, isn’t it? Frankly speaking, I dig the square-shaped stance and the upright front fascia. From the profile, the Cullinan has a longroof feel to it. The XXL-sized wheels, meanwhile, appear to be lost in the overzised arches.

To be underpinned by an all-new aluminum platform that will be shared with all next-generation Rolls-Royce models, the Cullinan is described as being an “all-terrain, high-sided vehicle.” What's more, the jacked-up take on the 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom will be testing at the Arctic Circle right after Christmas.

While we wait for the Goodwood-based automaker to decide if the IAA 2017 is the right place to take the wraps off the Cullinan, here’s some food for thought from Torsten Muller-Otvos, the head honcho of the Rolls-Royce brand: “Bringing together the new four-wheel drive system and the new ‘architecture of luxury’ for the first time sets us on the road to creating a truly authentic Rolls-Royce which, like its forebears, will reset the standard by which all other luxury goods are judged." Can't argue with that, can't you?

When you think about it, overlanding in rough terrain isn’t a new thing for Rolls-Royce. Remember Lawrence of Arabia? Yeah, he used to kick Turkish butt in the searing heat of the desert with the help of a squadron of armored Rolls-Royces. But compared to T.E. Lawrence’s war chariots, the upcoming Cullinan will glide over sand dunes, not bash them into submission.
