Rhys Millen Takes Pikes Peak 2012
It all started even before the race kicked off, when this was delayed by the Colorado wildfires. Once the competition was back on track, all the participants were nervous about the race, as this is the first time in its history when the vehicles had tarmac under their wheels for the entire length of the course.
The race, which wasn’t accident-free, was taken by drift star Rhys Millen, who beat Audi Le Mans winner Romain Dumas by under two hundredths of a second. His Hyundai Genesis Coupe drift car (whic had, of course been heavily modified for the competition) took him up the mountain in 9m 46.164s, which allowed him to set a new track record.
However, we can’t take the new record literally, since the track is now fully covered in tarmac for the first time. As for Dumas, his Porsche 911 GT3 R needed 9m 46.181s to complete the 12.42 miles (20 km) of the course.
