Renault and Ford Destined Dual Clutch Transmission Enters Production

Getrag has debuted the production of its latest Powershift transmission, the automatic dual clutch six-speed 6DCT250.

The gearbox will be used by the Renault Megane compact, Renault Scenic MPV and by the N.A. version of the Ford Fiesta sub-compact.

Getrag’s Modungo/Bari (Italy) and Irapuato (Mexico) plants have started the serial production of the transmission, with an initial annual production output of 100,000 units. The small vehicle-destined gearbox will be produced at a rate of 400,000 units per year by the end of 2011.

"With the Getrag Powershift 6DCT250 we will usher in the second era of dual clutch transmissions," said Bernd Eckl, COO of the Getrag Group.

The new gearbox offers a fuel consumption & emissions reduction of up to 20 percent, as compared to the values posted by a conventional torque converter transmission. For additional fuel savings, the company has designed the gearbox to be compatible with a start-stop system. This can be installed without requiring a hardware upgrade for the gearbox.

The gearbox has a high level of adaptability, as it can be combined with two wheel drive, all wheel drive and, when coupled to an electric motor, can serve as a hybrid application. The company has ambitious plans for its latest product, as it intends to supply it to multiple automotive companies.

"The transmission receives great interest worldwide, as it perfectly satisfies the market requirements of today and the near future. We already are in talks with several additional OEMs (original equipment manufacturers)" says Eckl.
