Automakers that operate in the United States know that it's a violation of Federal law for a dealership to deliver a new vehicle or even a used tire if it poses potential risks to the one that bought it. In the last eight months, we've been accustomed to safety recalls covering tens or even hundreds of thousands of cars, but even smaller recalls are serious for both carmaker, government and vehicle owners.
This time around, General Motors isn't recalling a large population of cars for ignition switch or key fob problems, but only 22 automobiles for a condition that doesn't seem that unsafe at first glance. General Motors says affected cars were assembled with roof rail airbags that were not reinforced at the points where the bags contact the hardware used to attach the roof carrier.
As a consequence to this assembly error, the roof rail airbag ensemble may be punctured or torn by the roof carrier hardware. In case of a crash, those airbags wouldn't deploy properly and/or offer sufficient protection to passengers. The culprit of this condition? A freakin' retaining acorn nut. Those 22 vehicles were assembled on May 13th, 2014, and include the 2015 Chevy Suburban and Suburban LTZ, Tahoe and Tahoe LTZ, GMC Yukon and the Yukon XL Denali.
To fix this defect, GM said it will notify owners and dealers of the aforementioned 22 big SUVs to schedule a service department visit. Dealers will replace the roof carrier attaching hardware free of charge. General Motors estimates that the first cars will be fixed in early September.
