We're not going to lie to you, the Range Rover Sport Coupe is the weirdest prototype to come out of Britain in ages.
The fact that Land Rover is even considering a rival for the BMW X6 is crazy on its own. But everything about it is difficult to comprehend.

For example, these are some fresh spy photos we got from a Spanish website called Deco Ches. They show two camouflaged 4x4 in the company of the Jaguar F-Pace.

Before blurting out the number plates, we did a background check and couldn't find anything. Are the Brits hiding their engines? One prototype is clearly more performance-oriented than the other, judging from the shape of the exhaust systems.

Just about everything we see doesn't fit the way we think of a Range Rover. For example, the Sport Coupe looks like it has regular car-like suspension. The body, meanwhile, is about the same length as the F-Pace yet also slightly narrower, especially at the top.

Our best bet is that the so-called Range Rover Sport Coupe is actually a new series based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. It will rival the next-gen Audi Q5 and BMW X3, not their full-sized counterparts. Remember, the Evoque is also a Range Rover, but it's a separate series.

The "Coupe" with the big exhaust and big wheels is an SVR performance model. However, that's where another mystery begins. You see, the rumors suggest Land Rover is in talks with BMW to gain access to their inline-6 and even V8 engines. Development costs are becoming too high for the British to do it alone.

But our own spy photos from back in August show the same prototype at Mercedes' Sindelfingen plant in Germany. And as some of you might know, they too are working on an inline-6 engine as part of a modular family.

Is it big or small? Are the engines made in Germany? Can we actually call this a coupe? These are just some of the questions that will have to wait until next year to be answered.
