On its way to Chrysler dealerships as we speak, the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, the only diesel-powered light duty truck sold in the United States, promises to be a huge success in its first year on the market. Dealers have placed more than 8,000 orders in the first weekend they were able to do so and we wouldn’t be surprised to find out that the figure doubled by now.
Since there aren’t any competitors on the horizon, selling the 1500 EcoDiesel in 2014 and in early 2015 will be like a walk in the park for Ram. But that could change next year, when the next-generation Nissan Titan, which is scheduled to receive a Cummins diesel V8 powerplant, will be launched.
Nothing official yet, but Nissan spokesman Dan Bedore told Edmunds that the new truck will be unveiled at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show in January, declining to reveal additional details. However, unnamed sources at Nissan have said that the Titan will also have a gasoline V6, while the Cummins unit will be offered as an option. Additionally, the manufacturer will introduce a regular cab version.
There are no official performance figures available at the time of writing, but Cummins said the new V8 engine will generate “more than 300 horsepower” and “mid-500s lb-ft” of torque. A recent report “updated” the numbers to 275 hp and 560 pound-feet. If the rumor proves to be real, the 2016 Titan will deliver best-in-class torque.
This doesn’t mean it will outgun the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which was launched with an impressive fuel economy of 28 miles per gallon on the highway, better than any full-size, half-ton result recorded by the EPA. It’s hard to believe the Cummins V8 will return something close to 28 mpg, but the Titan will offer superior towing capability. Hopefully, we’ll find out more about Nissan’s new pickup truck soon enough.
