Pure Madness: BMW E30 340i

If you’re a BMW E30 3 Series enthusiast you probably already know that the biggest engine ever fitted by the Germans to this chassis was a 3.3-liter inline 6-cylinder unit that was extremely rare and done just to bring down the fuel consumption.

The second biggest unit was a 2.7-liter engine with the same architecture and the same philosophy behind it. What we’re trying to say here is that the E30 did very well with engines that didn’t go over 2.5-liters, the maximum displacement value for even the fastest model, the M3. That’s because the chassis was perfectly balanced and the weight kept to a minimum.

Now imagine if that little car had, let’s say, a 4.4-liter V8 under the bonnet, making somewhere around 300 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. Wouldn’t that be something? Well it sure is, as one guy decided to swap such an M62 unit into his E30.

The car, featured in the video below, is looking absolutely brilliant and now has a sound to match, featuring that legendary E39 V8 growl that we’ve all grown to love. Of course, such a drastic improvement in power and weight (that additional displacement does come with some costs) required some new wheels, new brakes and so on, but in the end, all the hard work and money invested in this project added up to a mind blowing vehicle. Check it out!
