Comedian and car fanatic Jay Leno once said that the auto industry flipped upside down over the last century. When his Duesenberg was made, technology was really expensive and labour was dirt cheap, where as now things are the other way around, so servicing the valves on his classic car costs a small fortune.
What does that have to do with the Audi R8 tuning project before us? Simple, really – the affordability of metal presses and 3D milling machines means there's a boom of aftermarket wheel specialists. Before today, we've never heard about a company called Brixton Wheels, but their R8 project is definitely to our liking.
They took what was an ordinary sportscar and made it better with the Prior Design body kit that was unveiled three years ago. It adds lots of character and power to the quattro sportscar, making it look a bit like LMS racing version, clearly emphasized by the scoop on the roof.
Prior's kit includes everything from new bumpers, to wider wheel arches, a front lip spoiler made from carbon fiber and some serious mods around the back. There, the German machine sports a rear wing the size of a Cessna's , some large vent inserts and a new engine cover.
This white R8 was the star of a special photo shoot in Hong Kong after being modified by ReinART Design. The main attraction were the new wheels from Brixton. Called M53 Targa Series, they were delivered in a massive 20x12.5-inches.
And get this, that's not gold paint, it's real 24K gold plating, made to stand out even more by the back spokes. How often do you see gold being used on the most vulnerable part of a whole car?
Oh, and for the record, the PD GT850 Widebody Aero Kit costs €24,900. Add the cost of the car, the exhaust, the paint the wheels and that interior… yeah, this is one expensive R8.
