Prices of BMW 3.0 Coupe Models Are Going Up Because of Porsche

We’ve seen this trend with the BMW E30 M3 and nobody expected that car to be sold on the regular as a collector’s item for six figures. However, it’s happening and the new craze that seems to be taking over the collectors’ market is the 3.0 Coupe.

The prices for the model created by BMW back in the 1970s have gone up by more than 40 percent in the last 10 years and 20 percent was in the last three alone, showing a rather incredible growth. But what’s triggering this incredible rise in demand?

According to Carl Nelson, marque specialist and owner of La Jolla Independent, a restoration shop, it might be all due to Porsche:

“Honestly, what we think is driving a lot of that price escalation right now is the Porsche people. Porsches—especially early 911s—have gone out of sight recently. So those people that were looking at putting money into Porsche now are putting smaller amount into a BMW Coupe.”

That’s quite a twist, to be honest, because it makes sense and also because it’s extremely unexpected. It’s not like the car isn’t beautiful in its own way though.

Its body used to be made by the people from Karman and its beautiful shapes inspired many cars along the way. Not to mention the ultra-rare and incredibly muscular 3.0CSL, especially in Batmobile guise.

The thing is, restoring such a car will cost a pretty penny and it will need a lot of time and luck to return a profit. As Carl Nelson says, getting a 3.0 in good shape is an exercise of will but restoration companies usually recommend getting two or three models for spare parts, in order to be able to get the job done.

That would take the price of the initial acquisition up by a long measure all by its own but then you’d also have to pay the company to do the work for you (unless you plan to do the restoration yourself) and that will get the grand total up to possibly $150,000. Right now.

The thing is, the only cars we could find for sale on the internet were priced under $100,000 so as a profitable investment, this doesn’t make sense at the moment. However, if prices will keep on going up, things might change, it all depends on how much you’re willing to risk.
