Last week, Chrysler stole Ford’s drag strip crown, with its Lucifer-worthy 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat pulling an 11.2s quarter mile run and thus outpacing the otherwise supercharismatic Mustang Shelby GT500. While Blue Oval engineers are working on a 2016 Mustang Shelby GT500 that will give the Hellcat a run for its money, we have a quicker response involving Ford, but a rather unexpected one.
This all has to do with the 2015 Ford F-450 Super Duty, which the clip below shows racing towing against a 2015 Ram 3500. We’re talking oil-burning pulling competition here folks!
The feat took place on a 7 percent grade incline, on Interstate 64 in West Virginia and included one Ram and two Fords. The Chrysler Group pickup, as well as one of the Fords were pulling identical trailers, each hauling seven 2,300 lbs pallets of CMUs. Cargo included, each trailer tipped the scales at about 24,500 lbs.
This of course, was a battle between the Ford’s Power Stroke V8 diesel, which churns out 440 horses and 860 lb-ft of torque and the Ram’s Cummings straight six, a motor pushing 370 hp and a peak torque of 800 lb-ft. Predictable as the result may be, the fight is still entertaining to watch.
Oh and by the way, diesel drag races have accustomed us with a strong black smoke aroma, but this one is clean. Clean diesel that is.
