The MINI VS Porsche challenge is over before it has ever began, as Porsche has issued a press release refusing the battle. As we reported last week, MINI USA’s top man (a former Porsche employee) Jim McDowell challenged Porsche North America’s C.E.O. Detlev Von Platen by releasing a modern-age marketing video.
McDowell was planing a race between a MINI Cooper S and a Porsche 911 Carrera S, which was supposed to take place at Road Atlanta. However, the MINI executive did not offer the specific details of the race, only mentioning something about parking spots.
“Imagine our surprise to discover our former employee, now the head of Mini, has challenged us to a head-to-head race. In our early days, we pitted ourselves against the giants, so we've been in your shoes. While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we'll stick to racing the way we have over the decades," Von Platen responded.
"We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces. We also invite you to any of the thousands of tracks around the world where Porsche owners compete each weekend.”
In addition to that, Porsche has invited MINI to watch a video of the German company’s racing philosophy. You can check out the video bellow.
If you ask us, this is the true occasion to test MINI's marketing: will the company still be able to make a show or will the project be left in a ditch?
