Porsche Unveils 918 Prototype at Nurburgring Event

The 918 Spyder is still not finished, but when Porsche says they are showing a prototype, it’s usually better built than most people’s production models.

This 918 Spyder, a testbed for their upcoming hybrid supercar, was recently shown at the Gran Turismo Nürburgring Evo 2012, a track-day event at the famous German race track. It was in the company of a Zonda and a Veyron, but somehow it easily eclipsed them.

This exact prototype was revealed to you back in July 2012, when the car was spotted testing in the deserts of Spain, undergoing hot weather testing. At the time, we even showed you the interior of the car, which is now masked up.

The 918 Spyder is a spiritual successor to the 917, which is why it has race-inspired livery. Power comes from a 4.6-liter V8 and two electric motors, one for each axle.

Porsche has also made it their clear goal to take the 918 Spyder round the Nurburgring in less than seven minutes 22 seconds. This would mean a lap time comparable to the Corvette Z06 and the 2013 Nissan GT-R.
