Porsche North America Vice President of Marketing Andre Oosthuizen has recently confirmed the Macan will get the diesel-powered variant it's been missing.
In an interview with Automotive News, he said the Macan Diesel would have about 245-hp, which is slightly less than the 255-hp (258 PS according to the European rating) on overseas models. The official also said that development is currently underway and could be finished in time for a 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show debut.

The on-sale date has not been established, but should come in late 2015 or early 2016. Prices would start at under $60,000, which would place this model in the same market spot as the BMW X5 xDrive35d, which retails $57,000, is slightly bigger and comes with a 255-hp (258 PS) 3-liter inline-six engine.

What's taking so long...

The Macan S Diesel has been available from launch in Europe and most of Asia. So why can't they sell that in North America as well? It's because some states have specific emission regulations that require re-testing of diesel engines. Porsche's V6 diesel will have to lower its start-up particle emissions.

Another problem engineers might be facing has more to do with consumer preference than regulations. US buyers, for example, expect a sportier throttle response.

What sort of performance can I expect from my US-spec 2016MY Macan S Diesel?

As we've already established, the 3-liter V6 engine will be slightly de-tuned compared to its European cousin. However, it's still reasonable to expect 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) times of just over 6 seconds and a top speed in the region of 140 mph (225 km/h).

Ironically, its biggest rival is the car that lent the Macan its platform. Audi sells more of its TDI clean diesels than anybody else and about a fourth of all Q5s are sold with a 3-liter V6, priced from $47,000.

Our say: So Porsche North America currently has a Cayenne with a base diesel and a Macan with a base petrol? No wonder people say the smaller SUV is better.
