The soundtrack of a Porsche air-cooled engine is like no other and since all artist need to take care of their voices, Porsche is introducing a dedicated line of Classic Motor Oil goodies on the US market.
The lubricants have been created by Porsche Classic with the help of the Porsche Development Center in Weissach, Germany, with its main targets being the 356 and 911 models. We have to understand that air-cooled units rely on their lubricants even more than the water-cooled powerplants modern Porsches use.

We are talking about two versions here. There’s a 20W-50 covering all 356, 914 and 911 models up to the 2.7-liter G-Model and 10W-60 for flat-six units with a displacement of 3 liters up to the 911 (993 generation).

Porsche offers us multiple reasons for which the modern, high-tech oils aren’t the best choice for senior engines. For instance, these bespoke motor oils pay special attention to the driving schedule of classic models, which spend a lot of time in the garage. Nonetheless, this is not their only aim.

“The low viscosity of a 0W-30 oil means optimum cold-start behaviour, low engine resistance and other benefits in modern engines. In a 356, however, an oil of this kind can result in leaks and increased oil consumption due to the engine's higher production tolerances and lower oil pressure during operation,” the carmaker’s statement reads.

“Modern oils also use highly efficient detergent/dispersant agents to thoroughly clean the engine and reliably remove dirt, which can be too much of a good thing for a classic Porsche engine. it is important that the deposits which have built up over decades are not suddenly dissolved and that seals are not corroded,” Porsche goes on to explain.
