Porsche Explaining Its Design DNA Is a Cool Short Lesson

The jokes about Porsche designers having the easiest jobs in the world are getting really old, simply because... they were old from the very beginning. Zuffenhausen’s styling people actually have the very complex task of maintaining the design DNA throughout the model range and over the various generations.

Nowadays, German carmakers seem to have developed a true obsession for the family identity concept - Audis now all look the same, BMWs aren't all that far from this, while Mercedes-Benz wants all the models in its range to impersonate the S-Class.

Well, Porsche has always been obsessed with this DNA and the five decades of 911 evolution are the best testament to this - to the untrained eye, an air-cooled Neunelfer or a water-cooled one may look identical.

Nonetheless, when it came to the differentiation of the various classes, Porsche has done a wonderful job at maintaining a balance, so nobody is going to mistake a Macan for a Cayenne.

How does Porsche define its design DNA?

The automotive producer has just release a clip in which the usual masculine voice explains how the traditional styling lines are spread throughout the line-up. The video allows you to see how the various Porsche signature lines shape all the vehicles in the line-up, from the Cayenne to the 918 Spyder.

Speaking of which, we are about to witness yet another one of Porsche’s subtle penning jobs, as 2015 will bring us the facelift for the 991-generation 911. So far, we’ve only seen spyshots (lots of them), but the rumormill states the visual transformation will be focused on what has always been the 911’s favorite area, namely the rear.

Thus, the lights will draw inspiration from those of the 918 Spyder, just like it happened in the case of the Macan. Moreover, the third brake light will run the entire length of the engine cover.

Until the redesigned 911 lands in Geneva of Frankfurt next year, we’re inviting you to enjoy the brief Porsche styling lesson below.
