The 911 title of top sportscar is hotly contested by rivals from Germany and even the new Corvette. However, its baby brother the Cayman has no such problems. Neither the 2014 Lotus Exige or the Alfa Romeo 4C have proven themselves worthy of taking on the top dog in the segment. Which means Porsche is left free to innovate.
Exactly how Stuttgart plans to do that has been known for over a year know. A new family of horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engines is being planned. While dropping two cylinders, the Cayman will gain its first turbocharger, something none of its rivals offers at the moment.
Of course, making a new engine for a sportscar isn't as easy as chopping a couple of cylinders and adding a fan to push more air in. Which is why Porsche engineers have been working on this car for about a year already. t’s understood Porsche is going for a 1.6-liter unit and a 2.0-liter unit, both equipped with sophisticated direct injection and at least one turbocharger. There's also going to be a 2.5-liter for applications on flagship versions of the Cayman and Boxster or the 911 range.
With added torque and slightly lower weight, the Cayman will finally be able to deal with all the new hot hatches that have been encroaching zone of the 0 to 62 charts.
Cosmetically, things the changes can never be fully understood from spyshots. However, just like with the Cayenne and Panamera facelifts, Porsche will surely find a way to make this an even better looking machine. New DRLs and maybe even LED headlights might be offered, along with subtle changes to the bumper designs.
