During a Volkswagen Group press conference made Yesterday, VW Group CEO Martin Winterkorn said not only announced ambitious sales numbers for 2014, but also revealed a number of future new models that will be debut this year or the next. Standing head over shoulders, the new plug-in hybrid version of the Porsche Cayenne demanded our attention attention. Maybe a year before it actually goes on sale, we have the very first photos of what will likely be the most fuel-efficient hybrid SUV out there.
You can easily tell it's a plug-in hybrid from the fact that an electric charging plug is being used to refill the 9.4 kWh battery. The socket is covered by a cap which on the left side of the car, symmetrical to the gas cap on the passenger side.
We have reason to believe the model will be a replacement for the existing current Cayenne S Hybrid, offering superior numbers both in terms of performance and economy. The same powertrain used by the S E-Hybrid version of sister model Panamera will be in place. This parallel plug-in full hybrid should deliver 414 systemic PS from a V engine and a powerful electric motor. That's substantially more than the 380 PS offered by the Cayenne S Hybrid.
Acceleration times should drop from 6.5 seconds to about 6 seconds while the top speed will be increased to 250 km/h or slightly above. Perhaps more impressive is the expected drop in fuel consumption. The plug-in version of the Panamera uses 56% less fuel than the regular old hybrid. If we're to extrapolate that reduction to the Cayenne version, it means a claimed number of 3.6 liters per 100 kilometers (8.2 -56%).
You're never going to get that in the real world, but an SUV weighing 2 tons that claims anything under 5 l/100km simply boggles the mind.
The German rivals
Of course, Porsche isn't the only one with such a model. BMW is also testing such a version of its X5 model. Previewed by the eDrive Concept of last year, it will be powered by a 2-liter turbo engine couple to an electric motor capable of propelling the vehicle on its own.
Mercedes could also be working on a plug in version of the ML-Class. Although not confirmed, this model could come together next year, together with the facelift of the model. The powertrain has already been developed and fitted to the S500 Plug-in Hybrid. It consists of a twin-turbo 3-liter V6 and a powerful electric motor.
